This course provides a high-level overview of the calculation of personal taxes, with a focus on the role of tax credits and the impact of alternative minimum tax (AMT) on overall tax payable. Participants will revisit key concepts related to common credits and foreign tax relief, while gaining a clearer understanding of how these elements interact in determining final tax outcomes. The course emphasizes core principles to support informed planning and decision-making.
Topics include:
- Personal and family tax credits including Canada employment credit, CPP and EI contributions tax credit, transfer of tax credits to a spouse and federal personal alternative minimum tax.
- Home accessibility tax credit, Adoption expense tax credit, new home buyers tax credit.
- Tax credits for tuition and student loan interest, tuition fees and Canadian training credit.
- Medical expenses tax credit.
- Donations.
- Volunteer firefighter tax credit and search and rescue volunteer tax credit.
- Contributions to federal political parties.
- Labour-sponsored funds tax credit, investment tax credits, foreign tax credits.
- Refundable tax credits, refundable goods and services tax credit, Federal clawback of OAS, tax relief on retroactive lump-sum payments.
- Tax on split income (“TOSI”).
- Income earned or not earned in a province.

Margaret Riggin, CPA, CA obtained her CA in 1980 and completed the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax program in 1984. She is a sole practitioner providing tax consulting services to small firms and sole practitioners. She has extensive experience with estates and will planning, corporate reorganizations, real estate, acquisitions and divestitures, and corporate and personal tax planning. Margaret has been a frequent instructor and lecturer for CPAO, teaches income tax law at York University, and is an accomplished author on various tax subject matters.
