Description
Participants will develop a practical, end‑to‑end understanding of Canadian corporate tax return preparation, from computing net income for tax purposes through to federal/provincial tax calculations and key disclosure requirements. Participants will also learn to identify planning opportunities that commonly arise during T2 preparation and to validate tax software outputs.
Topics include:
- Net income for tax purposes: GAAP starting point and common adjustments (e.g., reserves, capital items, employee benefits, automobiles, meals/entertainment).
- Asset transactions: capital cost allowance (classes, acceleration, disposals), replacement property, non‑arm’s‑length transfers, and capital gains/loss mechanics.
- Taxable income and losses: donations, dividends and anti‑avoidance touchpoints, loss utilization and acquisition‑of‑control impacts.
- Corporate relationships: arm’s‑length concepts, control (de jure/de facto), related/affiliated/associated/connected corporations and their effects.
- Federal corporate taxes: Part I calculations (SBD/AAII/taxable capital limits), integration features, Part IV and refundable accounts, and key credits.
- Other issues and provincial considerations: filing/assessment/reassessment timelines, penalties/interest, disclosure, and high‑level provincial variations.
