Description
This course covers the fundamentals of effective business writing and examines how AI is altering the landscape.
AI is an unparalleled productivity tool, which creates a new challenge for CPAs. Namely, when CPAs draft emails and documentation, it is tempting to outsource the writing to AI; however, clients and stakeholders still want to receive communications that sound like they were written by their trusted advisor.
This course will help participants improve their core writing skills while thoughtfully integrating AI into their work. The session will prioritize professional judgment and the human voice but demonstrate how AI can be woven into the writing process to achieve greater efficiency.
Technology Requirements: This course incorporates generative AI tools throughout. Demonstrations may use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or Microsoft Copilot, and participants are welcome to follow along using whichever platform they prefer. No specific AI tool or version is required.
Key Takeaways
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Write Clearly: Apply the five key techniques for avoiding ambiguity.
- Use AI to Write More Efficiently: Leverage AI, without abandoning critical thinking.
- Approach the First Draft Intelligently: Know when to write a draft yourself versus when to generate it with AI.
- Craft Useful Reports and Executive Summaries: Improve the coherence of your writing, and provide an up-front summary for busy executives.

Speaker(s)
Ryan Standil leads seminars about effective written communication. He is a regular speaker at accounting firms, law firms, corporations, and governmental agencies. During Ryan’s communication seminars, participants learn how to view their own writing from the perspective of their readers. By adopting this perspective, participants are able to draft emails and documentation that resonate with their clients and colleagues. Ryan is a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail. Unsurprisingly, his columns can be described as “writing about writing.”
