This course provides a review of the recognition, measurement, disclosure and presentation related to related parties, with emphasis on the initial and subsequent measurement of related party financial instruments, retractable or mandatorily redeemable shares, classification of related party balances on the balance sheet, and cash flow statement, accounting for business combination between related parties and presentation and disclosure. The course supports a deeper understanding of how requirements affecting related parties apply in practice and strengthens participants’ ability to interpret and apply the standard effectively.
Topics include:
- Core ASPE financial instrument concepts, such as identification of related parties, recognition and measurement of related party financial instruments, and retractable or mandatorily redeemable shares.
- Overview of key disclosure and presentation areas for related parties, including cross-corporate guarantees, classification of related party balances on the balance sheet, and classification of changes in related party balances on the statement of cash flow.
- Overview of foundational topics, including accounting for business combinations between related parties.
- Illustrative examples, exercises, and sample disclosures that reinforce participants’ understanding of the practical application affecting related parties.

Stephen J. Hussey, CPA, CA received his CA designation in 1982 after graduating from Carleton University. He has been Finance Manager at Ontario Aboriginal Housing Support Services Corporation since 2010. Prior to this Stephen was a Senior Manager with KPMG working in Ottawa, Johannesburg (Accounting and Auditing Standards), Montreal and Sault Ste Marie. He was then a partner is the Sault Ste. Marie office of Grant Thornton. Stephen is also a Professor at Algoma University and an Adjunct Professor at the Lukenda School of Business - Lake Superior State University. At these universities he teaches Advanced Accounting. Stephen has also served on the Board of Directors for a number of not- for-profit organizations.
