Description
This course is a recording from our Special Event: AML Regulations: Going Beyond Compliance.
Under federal anti-money laundering legislation, accountants and accounting firms are required to maintain a program designed to reasonably ensure compliance with the requirements of that legislation. This has historically resulted in many reporting entities taking a “check box” approach to meet their bare minimum regulatory obligations. Bill C-12 (the Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act), introduced by the government in June 2025, proposes to change the requirement to maintain a program from one that is merely compliant, to one that is risk-based and effective. While this bill has yet to receive royal assent, FINTRAC has already begun to signal that the requirement for effectiveness is the direction in which the regulatory winds are blowing.
This course will focus on strategies for designing a compliance program that is effective, rather than merely compliant.
