This course provides a focused refresher on personal tax planning, emphasizing employment income and the strategic use of tax-deferred savings vehicles. Participants will strengthen their understanding of key areas such as taxable benefits, common deductions, and planning opportunities related to registered plans including RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs, RDSPs, and FHSAs. Through practical examples and applied discussions, the course highlights current rules and anti-avoidance considerations to help translate technical concepts into effective, real-world planning strategies for individuals and owner-managed contexts.

- Employee vs self-employed;
- Employment income planning;
- Taxable and non-taxable benefits;
- Taxation of allowances, automobile benefits;
- Employee loans;
- Stock option issues;
- Deductions from employment income;
- Registered plans and savings, RRSP/RRIF, spousal RRSP, TFSA, RESP, RDSP, FHSA, HBP/LLP mechanics, and anti‑avoidance highlights.

Margaret Riggin, CPA, CA obtained her CA in 1980 and completed the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax program in 1984. She is a sole practitioner providing tax consulting services to small firms and sole practitioners. She has extensive experience with estates and will planning, corporate reorganizations, real estate, acquisitions and divestitures, and corporate and personal tax planning. Margaret has been a frequent instructor and lecturer for CPAO, teaches income tax law at York University, and is an accomplished author on various tax subject matters.
