CPA Ontario and CBV Institute are pleased to present a new collaborative workshop entitled ‘Hot Topics in Business Valuation’. This session will address various topics that frequently arise in the context of preparing a business valuation report and business sale or succession.
Topics Include:
- Balance sheet issues, such as normalized working capital, identifying debt-like items and the valuation of redundant assets.
- Normalizing EBITDA, including pro-forma adjustments, dealing with volatility, SR&ED tax credits, and foreign exchange considerations.
- Assessing the reasonableness of forecasts.
- The impact of ESG on business valuation and open market transactions.
- Cost of capital issues, such as estimating the risk-free rate, determining an appropriate capital structure and measures of industry risk.
- Tax considerations, such as trapped-in capital gains and how to handle RDTOH and other tax accounts.
- Leveraged buyout (LBO) modelling as a reasonableness test.
The workshop format will allow participants to raise other topics of interest and provide a forum to discuss best practices in valuation.

Howard is the author of several books on the subjects of business valuation and corporate finance, including Business Valuation in Canada (CPA Canada, 2021).
