Session #2: Natasha Smith, Partner, Social Impact Group, Miller Thomson LLP / '20/21 Civic Action DiverseCity Leadership Fellow Topic: Not For Profit Updates for CPAs - ONCA With the transition period prescribed under Ontario’s Not-For-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) coming to a close, this course focuses on the corporate governance framework that will be applicable to Ontario-incorporated non-share capital non-profits as of October 19, 2024. In addition to other pertinent information, this course aims to equip CPAs with the information required to advise clients on their filing obligations and new financial review thresholds under the ONCA. The transition rules applicable to share-capital social clubs, which differ from those applicable to non-share capital corporations, will also be reviewed, including recent and critical amendments to the continuance process. Natasha Smith is a partner in the Social Impact Group, with a practice dedicated to providing practical legal advice to charities and non-profits, exclusively. Natasha’s practice focuses on helping her clients to determine the best structure for their organization and to navigate the complex regulatory environment in which they operate. Susan Radwan, MEd, CAE, SMP, GSP is the owner of Leading Edge Mentoring, a governance and leadership consulting firm with an international scope of practice, based in Grand Ledge, Michigan. She is a contractor with Capacity Canada. Radwan consults with boards who want to become more strategic, facilitates Strategic Planning events, and teaches boards and CEOs of non-profit organizations in the ways of governance and association management. Radwan attended the Policy Governance Academy, taught by John and Miriam Carver, in 1999. Since then, a large percentage of her consulting work has focused on boards practicing or desiring to practice Policy Governance. Her consulting practice reaches a wide variety of organizations and boards who want to be more strategic in their approach to governing. She currently coaches two Pan-Canadian Boards of Directors. | |
Ninette Bishay, CPA, CA, is an Assurance Partner and Co-Leader of the Charities & Not-for-Profit Service Team at the accounting firm, Adams & Miles LLP, and has been providing assurance, tax and advisory services exclusively to this sector for almost 20 years. Leanne Mongiat, CPA, CA is an Assurance Partner and Co-Leader of the Charities & Not-for-Profit Service Team at the accounting firm, Adams & Miles LLP, and is also the Quality Assurance Partner and Co-Chair of the firm’s Standards Committee. Leanne has been focused on serving the not-for-profit sector for more than two decades, providing assurance, tax and advisory services. Leanne has served as the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the True Davidson Meals on Wheels Program and was the Treasurer of the ACE After Four Enriched Program for several years.
