In this certificate, members will learn how to develop prompt engineering skills to get optimal output from AI models. Prompt engineering is a critical skill for accountants who want to make the best use of emerging GenAI tools like Claude and ChatGPT. Knowing how to create effective prompts for such tools will boost productivity, accuracy and speed.

Don’t be put off by the term ‘engineering’. It has little to do with actual engineering, but rather more to do with communication and providing the most accurate detailed instructions for the AI tool. Effective prompts are specific, detailed and provide clear parameters. The following are the types of detailed commands worth including in your prompts: goal, tone, word count, audience and format.
It is still very early days for these AI tools, but where prompt engineering is proving valuable is in commands such as summarizing lengthy, complex reports and contracts and extracting key information. This helps to speed up the process, directing the user to a specific page and avoiding having to trawl through swathes of time-consuming text.

This CPA Ontario course is a live virtual certificate program delivered over three live sessions. We recommend you join five minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of each session.

Tomas Milo is a CPA and PhD candidate in Management (Accounting specialization) at McGill University, where he combines his accounting expertise with Data Science and empirical research. Previously, Tomas worked at KPMG in their Audit, Deal Advisory, and Data Science departments, where he developed his skills in analyzing financial data and automating accounting processes. Tomas is the principal consultant at Sigma Optimized, where he leverages AI and analytics tools to refine business processes for CPA firms, medical practices, and venture-funded start ups. Tomas is also a member of the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) Taskforce, and he presented his research at the United Nations Resource Management Week 2024 in Geneva.
